...The most characteristic are Junger, who represented the front-line generation of World War I, and who embodied the feelings of an outsider in the everyday life of snobbish citizens in the literature of aesthetic revolutionary nationalism, and G. Benn, whose avant-garde style is inseparably linked to petty-bourgeois fantasies. Hermann Kesten (1900-96) embodied the image of man in the final stage of the Weimar era, and published The Cheat (1932), which, so to speak, reversed the hero legend into a negative one, symbolizing this tendency to mix talent and deception in the same person.

The Germanic variant of modernism, the Expressionist painting group, which includes the Brücke (The Bridge) and the Blue Rider (The Blue Rider), had already been established before World War I.
