Reaction formation

Japanese: 反動形成 - はんどうけいせい

A psychological concept. One of the defense mechanisms discovered by S. Freud. It is a mental attitude or habit of trying to control unacceptable impulses by emphasizing the opposite tendency. Excessive consideration for others can mask aggression toward them, and a love of cleanliness can mask a love of filth. Reaction formation was discovered by Freud in obsessive-compulsive neurotics, where strong sexual interest creates contempt for sex, and hatred creates the opposite, pampering. It is also widely seen among healthy people, and behavior described as "polite rudeness" and "foolishly polite" are typical examples. Behavior based on reaction formation appears awkward and artificial to those around you, even if the person himself is not aware of it. On the other hand, it cannot be denied that reaction formation has the positive potential to form the basis of sublimation.

心理学の概念。S.フロイトが発見した防衛機制の一つ。反対の傾向を強調することによってみずからが受容しがたい衝動を制御しようとする心的な態度ないし習性をいう。他人への過度の配慮が，その人に対する攻撃心を覆い隠すものであったり，清潔好きが汚物愛好を隠すものであったりする。反動形成はフロイトが強迫神経症者について見いだしたもので，強い性的関心が性への蔑視を生み出したり，憎しみの感情が反対の甘やかしを生じさせる。健康人の間にも広くみられ，〈慇懃無礼〉〈馬鹿丁寧〉などと形容されるふるまいはその典型である。反動形成に基づく言動は，当人は気づいていないとしても，周囲の者には，ぎこちなくわざとらしくうつるものである。一方，反動形成は，昇華の基礎を形づくるプラスの可能性をもっていることも否定できない。
