Lagoon

Also called a lagoon. A shallow lake formed when part of the ocean is enclosed by the development of sand dunes, sand spits, coastal banks, etc. When completely enclosed, it can become a freshwater lake when river water is pumped in. Examples include Lake Jusan (Aomori Prefecture) and Kahokugata (Ishikawa Prefecture).
