A town in Minamitsugaru District, southern Aomori Prefecture. The town center along the Ou Main Line has long developed as a hot spring town along with Kuradate on the opposite bank of the Hirakawa River. The spring water is gypsum-filled, with a temperature of 72-79°C. Mount Ajara behind it is also famous as a ski resort. The Tohoku Expressway runs through the town. 163.43 km2 .
