The name Kurdish emerged after the Arab conquest in the 7th century. Before that, they were known as Kardaka (2nd millennium BC in Sumerian inscriptions), Kurtie (7th century BC during the Assyrian Empire), and Kardakai (5th century BC during the Achaemenid Empire).
