Oyano Island

An island located in the mid-west of Kumamoto Prefecture, at the entrance to the Amakusa Islands. It belongs to Kamiamakusa City. It faces the Uto Peninsula across the Misumi Strait, but is connected to the Kyushu mainland and Kamishima by the Five Amakusa Bridges. Its area is 29.88 square kilometers. It is a low mountain island with advanced dissection, and except for andesite (Quaternary period) scattered in the north, the entire island is made of sedimentary rocks (Tertiary period). The highest point is Mt. Hidake, 229 meters high. Misumi Port (Uki City) and the JNR (now JR) Misumi Line were opened in the mid-Meiji period, so commercial agriculture was introduced early, and floriculture, outdoor vegetable cultivation, dairy farming, and other activities that take advantage of the frost-free zone were popular, but recently, activities other than floriculture have been sluggish. Along with the coast of the Uto Peninsula, it is part of the Misumi Oyano Seaside Prefectural Natural Park. Amakusa whetstones, once widely known as whetstones for swords, have been mined in the western part of the island since the Edo period. The coast is ideal for swimming and fishing. Population 14,729 (2000).

熊本県中西部、天草諸島(あまくさしょとう)の入口にある島。上天草市(かみあまくさし)に属する。三角(みすみ)ノ瀬戸を挟んで、宇土(うと)半島と相対するが、天草五橋によって九州本土および天草上島(かみしま)と結ばれる。面積29.88平方キロメートル。開析の進んだ低山地性の島で、北部に点在する安山岩類（新生代第四紀）を除けば、全域、堆積(たいせき)岩（新生代第三紀）からなる。最高点は飛岳(ひだけ)の229メートル。三角港（宇城(うき)市）、国鉄（現、JR）三角線が明治中期には開かれていたことから、商業的農業の導入が早く、無霜地帯の利点をいかした花卉(かき)栽培、露地野菜栽培、酪農などが盛んであったが、最近では花卉栽培以外は低調である。宇土半島の海岸とともに三角大矢野海辺県立自然公園(みすみおおやのかいへんけんりつしぜんこうえん)に属する。かつて、刀剣用砥石(といし)として広く知られていた天草砥石は、本島西部で、江戸時代から採掘が続いているものである。海岸は海水浴と釣りに好適。人口1万4729（2000）。
