Jones, Bobby

...The technical progress in the United States was remarkable. In the U.S. Open in 1813, an unknown 20-year-old American, FD Ouimet, defeated the top British professional, Harry Vardon, and in 1921, the first American professional, J. Hutchison, won the British Open in 1921. Thus, the mainstream of golf shifted from Britain to America, and in 1930, Bobby Jones (1902-1971), who achieved the annual Grand Slam by winning the British Open, the U.S. Open, the British Amateur, and the U.S. Amateur, produced such famous golfers as S. Snead, Ben Hogan, A. Palmer, and J. Nicklaus. The number of professional tournaments in America gradually increased after the Western Open was founded in 1899, reaching 38 tournaments per year in 1938.
