Johnston, D.

Other playwrights with a strong connection to the Abbey include S. O'Casey, who succeeded in putting Dubliners on stage in plays such as The Sniper's Shadow (premiered in 1923) and Juno and the Peacock (premiered in 1924), Dunsany, who played The Glittering Gate (premiered in 1909), Edward Martyn, Padric Colum, and Lennox Robinson. The Gate Theatre, built in 1928 by Michael MacLiamor and others, hosted performances of Irish classics and modern plays from outside of Ireland, as well as Denis Johnston, who used expressionist dramaturgy in plays such as The Old Lady Says No (premiered in 1929) and Moon on the Yellow River (premiered in 1931). The Pike Theatre, founded in the 1950s, under the direction of the up-and-coming director Alan Simpson, made a name for itself by giving the Irish premiere of Beckett's Waiting for Godot in the same year (1955) as the London premiere.
