...Some species have colonies that can be seen all year round, but in the fall the colony breaks down, leaving behind parts of the stalks that overwinter, and in the spring these bud off and form colonies. Freshwater bryozoans usually produce dormant buds to overwinter, but some, such as Stephanella hina , grow colonies in the winter and then produce dormant buds and disappear in the spring. Dormant buds are produced asexually in the stomach cord that connects the stomach to the body wall, and can withstand dryness and low temperatures; in Stephanella hina, the colony was said to be capable of germination for as long as four and a half years.
