A general term for igneous phenomena caused by magma at shallow depths or on the surface of the earth. Eruptions are a typical example, and are also called volcanic activity. These include the eruption of lava, the release of volcanic gases and volcanic debris, and the formation of volcanic bodies (→ volcanoes). They occur in clusters in orogenic belts and mid-ocean ridges.

火成作用のうち，マグマが浅所または地表で引き起こす現象の総称。噴火がその典型で，火山活動ともいう。溶岩の噴出，火山ガスや火山砕屑物などの火山噴出物の放出，火山体（→火山）の形成などが含まれる。造山帯や中央海嶺に密集して起こる。
