Volcanism; volcanic activity
A general term for igneous phenomena caused by magma at shallow depths or on the surface of the earth. Eruptions are a typical example, and are also called volcanic activity. These include the eruption of lava, the release of volcanic gases and volcanic debris, and the formation of volcanic bodies (→ volcanoes). They occur in clusters in orogenic belts and mid-ocean ridges.
