Although it can refer to a method of transplanting artificial hair, it mainly refers to a method of transplanting natural hair from another part of the body into a hairless area. It is used for pubic atrichia, cicatricial alopecia, eyebrows that have fallen out due to leprosy, etc. However, only autologous transplants, that is, transplants of the person's own hair, are allowed. In the past, transplants of only hair shafts were performed, but because they would fall out due to rejection, nowadays skin containing terminal hair is transplanted, which is almost the same as skin grafting.

人工毛を移植する方法をさす場合もあるが，主として無毛の部分に他の部分の生毛を移植する方法を意味する。陰部無毛症，瘢痕(はんこん)性脱毛症，ハンセン病で脱落したまゆ毛などに行う。ただし，自家移植，すなわち本人の毛の移植以外はできない。かつては毛幹のみの移植も行われたが，拒絶反応によって脱落するため，現在は硬毛を含んだ皮膚を移植するため，植皮術とほとんど同じ。
