An evergreen tall tree (illustration) of the Euphorbiaceae family that is common in secondary forests. It is found in Southeast Asia, Guangdong Province in China, Taiwan, and the islands of Oceania, and in Japan, in Okinawa. It grows to about 5m in height. As its Japanese name suggests, its broad ovate leaves are large, up to 30cm in length and the petioles 25cm long. It is also characterized by its shield-shaped petioles. Young branches, petioles, and the undersides of leaves are densely covered with soft, pale yellow hairs. It is dioecious, with short racemes in the axils, and blooms in spring. 二次林に多いトウダイグサ科の常緑高木(イラスト)。東南アジア,中国の広東省,台湾,オセアニアの諸島に分布し,日本では沖縄に産する。高さ5m内外。和名が示すように,広卵形の葉は大きく,長さ30cm,葉柄の長さ25cmになる。また葉柄が楯形につく点が特徴的である。若い枝,葉柄,葉の裏には淡黄色の柔らかい毛が密に生える。雌雄異株で,短い総状花序を葉腋(ようえき)につけ,春に開花。花は花弁がなく小さくてめだたない。
