One distinctive film phenomenon from during and after the war was the close interaction and intertwining of "documentary" and "fiction films." For example, in the United States, a group of works were produced which were called "semi-documentary films." In the Soviet Union, a group of films which came to be called "documentary-drama films" included Mark Donskoy's Earth on Fire (1943), Leo Arnstam's Zoya (1944), Friedrich Ermler's The Great Turning (1945), Igor Savchenko's The Third Assault (1948), Vladimir Petrov's The Battle of Stalingrad (1949), and Mikhail Chiaurelli's The Fall of Berlin (1950). In Italy, works with a tendency known as "neorealism" were produced. This trend towards feature films using documentary techniques continued to diversify and develop in each country, giving rise to the "Polish School" (Polish cinema) of Andrzej Munk, Jerzy Kawalerowicz, and Andrzej Wajda in Poland, the "Free Cinema" of Tony Richardson, Karel Reisz, and Lindsay Anderson in Britain, the "Cinema Verite" of Jean Rouch and Chris Marker in France, the "Nouvelle Vague" of Jean-Luc Godard and François Truffaut, and the "Direct Cinema" of Lionel Rogosin, Albert Maysles, and Richard Leacock in America, all of which had a major influence on films in each country thereafter.

　戦中から戦後にかけての一つの特色ある映画現象は，〈ドキュメンタリー〉と〈劇映画〉が接近して交錯し，たとえばアメリカでは〈セミ･ドキュメンタリー(映画)〉と呼ばれる一群の作品が，また，ソビエトではマルク･ドンスコイ監督《戦火の大地》(1943)やレオ･アルンシタム監督《ゾーヤ》(1944)からフリードリヒ･エルムレル監督《大いなる転換》(1945)をへて，イーゴリ･サフチェンコ監督《第三の襲撃》(1948)，ウラジーミル･ペトロフ監督《スターリングラードの戦い》(1949)，ミハイル･チアウレリ監督《ベルリン陥落》(1950)に至って〈ドキュメンタリー･ドラマ映画〉と呼ばれた作品群が，また，イタリアでは〈ネオレアリズモ〉と呼ばれる傾向の作品がつくられたことである。このドキュメンタリーの手法による劇映画の傾向は，その後も各国で多様化しつつ進展し，ポーランドではアンジェイ･ムンク，イェジー･カワレロビッチ，アンジェイ･ワイダらの〈ポーランド派〉(ポーランド映画)，イギリスではトニー･リチャードソン，カレル･ライス，リンゼー･アンダーソンらの〈フリー･シネマ〉，フランスではジャン･ルーシュ，クリス･マルケルらの〈シネマ･ベリテ〉，あるいはまたジャン･リュック･ゴダール，フランソワ･トリュフォーらの〈ヌーベル･バーグ〉，アメリカではライオネル･ロゴーシン，アルバート･メイスルズ，リチャード･リーコックらの〈ダイレクト･シネマ〉が生まれ，その後の各国の映画に大きな影響をあたえることとなった。…
