The force exerted by a magnetic field on a charged particle when it moves through it. When a particle of charge q moves at speed v through a magnetic field with magnetic flux density B , the Lorentz force is expressed as q ( v × B ) and is perpendicular to both the magnetic flux density and the velocity. As a result, the particle bends in a direction perpendicular to the magnetic field, but does not receive work. When a particle moves through an electromagnetic field, qE + q ( v × B ) is sometimes called the Lorentz force, including the force due to the electric field E , and is often used as a basic formula to discuss the movement of charged particles in electromagnetic fields.
