A mammal of the order Lagomorpha and family Leporidae. A species of wild rabbit that is widely distributed in the tundra and northern coniferous forests of Eurasia from Scandinavia to eastern Siberia, and in the mountainous regions of Europe. In Japan, a subspecies, the Ezo snow hare L. t . ainu (illustration), lives in Hokkaido. It is very similar to the hare that lives in Honshu and other places, but is larger and has longer limbs. Its hind legs are particularly large, measuring around 16 cm, making it suitable for running on snow. Its body length is 46-55 cm, its tail length 4-8 cm, and its weight 2.7-3.6 kg.
