A port city in southern Nigeria. It is located at the mouth of the Cross River, about 150 km east of Port Harcourt, near the border with Cameroon. It was founded in the early 18th century by the Efik people of Ibibio descent, and flourished as a slave trading port. In the 19th century, a British commercial base was established there, and it was the capital of the Oil River Protectorate from 1885 to 1893, the Niger Coast Protectorate from 1893 to 1900, and southern Nigeria from 1900 to 1906. Until 2004, it was called Old Calabar. It is a major export port for palm oil, palm kernels, cacao, rubber, copra, and timber, and palm oil manufacturing, lumbering, woodcarving, and fishing are thriving. It is connected to other major cities by a highway. It is home to the University of Calabar. Population: 153,900 (1983). ナイジェリア南部の港湾都市。ポートハーコート東方約 150km,カメルーンとの国境に近いクロス川河口に位置。 18世紀初期にイビビオ族系のエフィク族が建設,奴隷貿易港として栄えたが,19世紀にイギリスの商業基地がおかれ,1885~93年オイルリバー保護領,93~1900年ニジェール沿岸保護領,1900~06年南部ナイジェリアの首都となり,04年まではオールドカラバルと呼ばれた。パーム油,パーム核,カカオ,ゴム,コプラ,木材などの主要輸出港で,パーム油製造,製材,木彫,漁業などが盛ん。高速道路で他の主要都市と結ばれる。カラバル大学がある。人口 15万 3900 (1983) 。
