Also called a missing link. When an evolutionary transition between two organisms is thought to exist, but no intermediate form has been found to substantiate it, the assumed intermediate form is called a missing (or missing) link. This is more often used to refer to transitions between slightly larger groups than to small transitions between species. One famous example discovered as a fossil is Archaeopteryx, which connects reptiles and birds, but if we take a somewhat broader understanding, we now know that many missing links exist through fossils and extant organisms, such as the hookworm, which can be considered an intermediate between annelids and arthropods and can be considered a living missing link.

ミッシングリンクともいう。2種の生物の間に進化的移行が考えられるが，それを実証すべき中間形態が見出されていないとき，その想定中間形態を，失われた (または欠けた) 環と称する。種と種の間の小さな移行よりも，やや大きい群の間の移行についていうことが多い。化石として発見された有名な一例は爬虫類と鳥類をつなぐ始祖鳥であるが，環形動物と節足動物の中間とみなせるカギムシは，生きている失われた環ともいえるなど，やや広く理解すれば，化石と現存生物を通じて多数の失われた環がいまでは知られている。
