In Arabic, burqu' is the most common word for a veil. Hijab, meaning to cover, is also used, but this is a contrasting word to suhur (removing the veil), advocated by Qasim Amin, the leader of the Arab women's liberation movement. Burqu is a long thin silk that covers the body except for the eyes, reaching down to the feet. To maintain a gap between the face and the veil, a cylindrical core called a kasaba is inserted, and those who have the means use one decorated with gold or silver.
