A representative court epic poet of the German High Middle Ages. He was born to a poor family (ministeriale) in Eschenbach (now Wolfram-Eschenbach), near the small city of Ansbach in central Franconia. He traveled around the country seeking the patronage of feudal lords, and stayed at the court of Landgrave Hermann of Thuringia, who attracted many poets as a patron of the arts and sciences. The so-called "Wartburg Song Contests," in which Wolfram was active at this court, were created by later poets, but it is likely that Wolfram met Walter von der Vogelweide, the greatest lyric poet of the Middle Ages.

ドイツ中世盛期の代表的な宮廷叙事詩人。中部フランケンの小都市アンスバハに近いエッシェンバハ(現，ウォルフラムス･エッシェンバハ)の貧しい家人(ミニステリアーレ)の家に生まれた。領主の恩顧を求めて諸国を遍歴し，学芸のパトロンとして多くの詩人を集めていたチューリンゲン方伯ヘルマンの宮廷にも逗留した。この宮廷でウォルフラムの活躍するいわゆる〈ワルトブルクの歌合戦〉は後代詩人の創作であるが，おそらくウォルフラムと中世最大の抒情詩人ワルター･フォン･デル･フォーゲルワイデとの出会いはあったであろう。
