Also called "shizui." The female organ of an angiosperm flower, it consists of three parts: the ovary, the style, and the flower head. After pollination, the style and flower head wilt or fall off, but the ovary develops and becomes a fruit. The pistil is made up of carpels that are homologous to the megasporophylls of heterosporous ferns (Selaginella arborescens) and gymnosperms (Cycads), and is a metamorphosed leaf. The pistils of the double-flowered variety of cherry blossom, Fugenzo, have reverted to green leaves. Unlike the megasporophylls of gymnosperms, the edges of the carpels of angiosperms close together to form a pouch that encases the ovules that become seeds. This part is called the ovary.
