Hessen-Nassau (English spelling)

…In the Austro-Prussian War of 1866, Germany sided with Austria, but unlike Kurhessen it was spared from annihilation and became a constituent state of the German Empire through the North German Confederation (only the area north of the Main River joined). After World War I it became a state of the Weimar Republic as the Free State of Hesse, and after World War II it was incorporated into the present state of Hesse together with the former Prussian state of Hessen-Nassau (consisting of Kurhessen, Nassau, and Frankfurt am Main, which were annexed by Prussia in 1866). (Rheinhessen on the left bank of the Rhine was incorporated into the state of Rhineland-Pfalz.) Parliamentary democracy is practiced under the state constitution of 1946. …
