A scholar of Japanese literature. Born in Kochi City. Graduated from the Department of Japanese Literature at Tokyo Imperial University. Became an assistant professor at Tohoku Imperial University in 1923 (Taisho 12) and a professor there in 1927 (Showa 2). He retired in 1955 and served as a professor at Kyoritsu Women's University from that year until 1959. In 1965 he became a member of the Japan Academy. He rejected the general knowledge of Japanese literature that had existed since Kokugaku, and pursued a method of stylistic research into Japanese literature, proposing Japanese literary studies and devoting himself to systematizing it. His many writings, including "Japanese Literary Studies" (1935), are collected in 10 volumes of "Okazaki Yoshie Collected Works" (1959-62), 7 volumes of "Selected Works of Okazaki Yoshie" (1968-71), and 5 volumes of "Selected Works of Okazaki Yoshie" (1973-74).
