For a complex number α, let us denote the complex conjugate of α by (if α = a + bi , then = a - bi ). For n ² numbers a i j such that ā _{i j} = a _{j i} (1 _{≦ i} , j ≦ n ), an equation for complex variables x ₁ , x ₂ , …, x _n is called a Hermitian form. H ( x ) takes real values for any x ₁ , x ₂ , …, x _n . Let a _{i j} be an nth order square matrix with ( i , j ) components, and denote this as A. For an nth order square matrix X , let X ^* denote the transposed matrix ^t of the matrix obtained by taking the complex conjugate of each component of X , then the condition _{i j} = a _{j i} can be expressed as A = A ^* .

複素数αに対して，αの複素共役をで表すことにする(α＝a＋biならば＝a－bi)。ā_ij＝a_ji(1≦i,j≦n)をみたすn²個の数a_ijに対し，複素変数x₁,x₂，……，x_nの式，をエルミート形式という。H(x)は任意のx₁,x₂，……，x_nに対し実数値をとる。a_ijを(i,j)成分とするn次正方行列とし，これをAと記す。n次正方行列Xに対して，Xの各成分の複素共役をとった行列の転置行列^tをX^*で表すものとすると，条件_ij＝a_jiは，A＝A^*と表される。
