Rila Monastery - Rila Monastery

Rila Monastery - Rila Monastery
Located in western Bulgaria, about 60km south of the capital Sofia, deep in the Rila Mountains, this is the headquarters of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. It began in the mid-10th century when the monk Ivan Rilsky practiced secluded asceticism here, and soon his followers and monks gathered here and developed into a settlement. After several major earthquakes and fires, it reached the height of its power under the protection of the king during the Second Bulgarian Empire in the 14th century, and a sturdy fortress was built to withstand attacks from foreign enemies. However, it was attacked by the Ottoman Empire in the 17th and 18th centuries, and was almost completely destroyed in a major fire in 1833. However, reconstruction began a year later, and 300 monks' solitary cells, four chapels, a library, and other facilities were completed on the vast grounds. The interior, surrounded by gorgeously painted exterior walls, is decorated with a huge number of frescoes and ornate ornaments. It was registered as a cultural heritage of the World Heritage Site in 1983.
