Located in western Bulgaria, about 60km south of the capital Sofia, deep in the Rila Mountains, this is the headquarters of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. It began in the mid-10th century when the monk Ivan Rilsky practiced secluded asceticism here, and soon his followers and monks gathered here and developed into a settlement. After several major earthquakes and fires, it reached the height of its power under the protection of the king during the Second Bulgarian Empire in the 14th century, and a sturdy fortress was built to withstand attacks from foreign enemies. However, it was attacked by the Ottoman Empire in the 17th and 18th centuries, and was almost completely destroyed in a major fire in 1833. However, reconstruction began a year later, and 300 monks' solitary cells, four chapels, a library, and other facilities were completed on the vast grounds. The interior, surrounded by gorgeously painted exterior walls, is decorated with a huge number of frescoes and ornate ornaments. It was registered as a cultural heritage of the World Heritage Site in 1983. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
