Austrian art historian. Born in Hornstein. Initially aspired to be an architect, he later switched to art history and studied under Dvorak and Julius von Schlosser (1866-1938) at the University of Vienna. He was a professor at the same university from 1936 to 1945 and at the University of Munich from 1951 to 1964. He analytically grasped the inherent structure of works of art, and was particularly controversial for his view of modern art as a symptom of the times. His major works include Loss of the Center (1948) and Revolution in Modern Art (1955). Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
