Born in Ghent (now part of Belgium), he studied law at Leiden University, but developed a deep interest in Greek and Roman classics, and later made great achievements in both research and education as a professor of classics at his alma mater. He revised Aristotle's Poetics and published it with a translation and annotations, while also writing his own Treatise on Tragedy, which influenced French playwrights Racine and Corneille.
