Ojuya - Ojuya

Japanese: お十夜 - おじゅうや

Abbreviation of Juya Nembutsu Hoyo. It is a Jodo sect ceremony in which nembutsu practice is held for ten nights from October 6th to 10th of the lunar calendar. It is also called Juya or Juyakai. It is said to originate from a historical event that occurred during the reign of Emperor Gohanazono when Taira Sadakuni retreated to Shinnyodo Temple in Kyoto and practiced for three days and three nights before becoming a monk. However, he had a dream where he was told to reconsider becoming a monk because he would be saved by Amida's vow. On the third day, he was ordered by the emperor to inherit the family home, so he practiced nembutsu practice for seven days and seven nights afterwards.

十夜念仏法要の略。浄土宗で旧暦 10月6日から 10日 10夜の間，念仏勤行を修する儀式のこと。十夜，十夜会とも称される。後花園天皇の頃，平貞国が京都の真如堂に参籠して3日3夜修して出家しようとしたところ，夢のお告げに弥陀の誓願によって救われるから出家を思いとどまるようにと言われ，3日目に公命で家を相続することになったので，その後7日7夜念仏勤行を修したという故事に由来するといわれる。
