[Animal distance recognition]
In the 1930s, Swiss zoologist H. Hediger (1908-92), director of the Basel Zoo, noticed that the reaction of vertebrates when they encounter a predator or human varies depending on the distance between them, and that this distance is specific to each species. That is, if the predator approaches within a certain distance, a flight reaction occurs, and if for some reason the predator is unable to escape and approaches within a certain distance, an aggressive behavior (defense reaction) occurs, and if the predator is cornered below that distance, a more violent aggressive behavior (critical reaction) occurs.

　スイスの動物学者でバーゼル動物園の園長だったヘディガーH.Hediger(1908‐92)は，1930年代に，脊椎動物が捕食者や人間に出会ったときの反応が相互の距離によって変化し，その距離は種に固有であることに気がついていた。すなわち，捕食者がある距離以内に近寄ると逃走反応が起こり，なんらかの理由で逃げられずに次のある距離以内に近づくと今度は攻撃行動(防衛反応)が起こり，さらに次のある距離以下に追い詰められるともっと激しい攻撃行動(臨界反応)が起こるのである。…
