This fern does not grow in Japan, but two genera and two species are known to exist in the Malay Peninsula, Borneo, and New Guinea (illustration). It is similar to the Polytrichum family, but differs in that the internal structure of the rhizome is complex, the leaves are repeatedly forked, and the sporangia have an insula. The distribution area of the extant species is limited, but fossils have been found over a wide area since the early Mesozoic era, up to the vicinity of the Arctic, suggesting that it coexisted with the Polytrichum family and evolved in parallel.
