Osugi Gorge - Osugikyokoku

Japanese: 大杉峡谷 - おおすぎきょうこく

Also known as Osugidani. A gorge in the upper reaches of the Miyagawa River that originates from Mt. Odaigahara in the central-southern part of Mie Prefecture, on the border with Nara Prefecture. Many waterfalls, including Senbiro Falls and Niko Niko Falls, flow down cliffs covered in primeval forest. It is said that timber for the construction of the Ise Grand Shrine was cut here until the Middle Ages. It belongs to Yoshino-Kumano National Park, and a hiking trail leads from Odai Town to Mt. Odaigahara.

大杉谷とも。三重県中南部，奈良県境の大台ヶ原山に発する宮川最上流の峡谷。原始林におおわれた断崖の下を千尋(せんびろ)滝，ニコニコ滝など多くの滝をなして流れる。中世まで伊勢神宮の式年造営材が伐り出されていたとされる。吉野熊野国立公園に属し，大台町から大台ヶ原山へ至る登山路が通じる。
