It is a public university corporation. It originated from Osaka Commercial Training School, which was established in 1879 (Meiji 12). In 1949 (Showa 24), it became a new university under the new system with the former Osaka University of Commerce (Osaka City), Osaka Municipal Miyakojima Technical College, Osaka Municipal Women's College, and other institutions as its parent organizations. Later, in 1955, it merged with Osaka City Medical College to form the School of Medicine. In 2006 (Heisei 18), it became a public university corporation. As of 2010, it is the largest public comprehensive university with eight faculties: commerce, economics, law, literature, science, engineering, medicine, and life science. All eight faculties (except for the commerce faculty, which has a business administration graduate school) have graduate schools (master's and doctoral programs), and there is also a creative city research graduate school (master's and doctoral programs) and a nursing graduate school (master's and doctoral programs). It has an auditing student system and a research student system to provide opportunities for citizens to study.
