The problem of finding the cheapest way to transport a product from the place of production to the place of consumption is a type of linear programming problem (a problem dealt with using linear programming), but it can be divided into several types depending on the conditions.
[Hitchcock type transportation problem]
This problem asks for the transportation method that minimizes the total transportation cost when there are multiple production areas and multiple consumption areas, and the production volume at each production area, the consumption volume at each consumption area, and the cost of transporting a unit amount from each production area to each consumption area are given.

　生産地と消費地がそれぞれ複数個所あって，おのおのの生産地における生産量，おのおのの消費地における消費量およびおのおのの生産地からおのおのの消費地に単位量を輸送するときの費用が与えられているときに，総輸送費が最小になるような輸送方法を求めよという問題。
