Matsudaira Tadanao - Matsudaira Tadanao

Japanese:
Matsudaira Tadanao - Matsudaira Tadanao

A feudal lord in the early Edo period. He was the eldest son of Yuki Hideyasu, the older brother of the second shogun, Tokugawa Hidetada. His mother was the daughter of Nakagawa Kazushige. In 1607 (Keicho 12), he inherited his father Hideyasu's territory, Fukui Castle in Echizen Province (said to have 670,000 koku), and in 1611 he married Shogun Hidetada's third daughter. In 1615 (Genwa 1), he achieved great success by killing Sanada Yukimura and others during the Summer Siege of Osaka. As a result, he was promoted to Sangi Jusanmi (Junior Third Rank) in the same year, but there was no increase in his territory. He was dissatisfied with the small reward, and after that he indulged in alcohol and sex, and he gained a reputation for cruelty within his territory. Also, on his way to Edo for work, he would sometimes return to his own country without permission and would not return to Edo for several years, so in 1890, he was exiled to Bungo Hagiwara (Oita City) and placed under the watch of the shogunate's Bungo Metsuke (Inspector of Bungo) for causing chaos in the domain's administration (Echizen Disturbances). In Bungo, he was provided with 5,000 koku to live on, and died there. This was seen as the result of oppression by his superior family, the son of Shogun Hidetada's older brother. His debauchery before his punishment became famous when Kikuchi Kan wrote a novel called "The Gyojyo-ki of Tadanao Kyo," but it is not necessarily historical fact.
