There are also translations such as "mass communication" and "mass report," but the Japanese-specific contraction "mass komimi" is more commonly used, and in this case it can also refer to the sender that produces the information (newspaper companies, publishers, broadcasting stations, etc.). Mass media is characterized by its speed, large number of recipients, and one-way flow of information. On the other hand, the opposite concept based on the number of recipients is the Japanese-English word "mini-komimi," personal communication, which is two-way in contrast to the one-way nature of mass media, and word of mouth, which refers to a person's direct address to another person through the media of mass media.
