A daily newspaper published in Tokyo before the Second World War. On October 7, 1886 (Meiji 19), Saikiku Jono, Densuke Nishida and other associates of the Tokyo Nichi Nichi Shimbun renamed the Keisatsu Shinpo and launched it as a popular newspaper, serializing stories and rakugo by famous entertainers such as San'yutei Encho. In 1900 (Meiji 33), the paper was taken over by Gunji Matsushita, and on November 1, it was renamed Yamato Shimbun, but in 1904, it reverted to its old title. During the Matsushita era, the paper became a Yamagata/Katsura newspaper affiliated with the clan faction, and during the Siemens scandal in the early Taisho era, it criticized the Yamamoto Gonbei cabinet and did its best to support the Okuma Shigenobu cabinet. This was the period of its heyday, and it went into decline after Matsushita's death in 1915 (Taisho 4). In the Showa era, it came into the hands of Iwata Tomio, a leader of the right-wing Taikakai, and became an evening paper, working to spread the idea of national defense. It has been confirmed that it was published until April 30, 1944 (Showa 19). [Akihiko Sunohara] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
