The script used to write Old Bulgarian (Old Church Slavic). In the 9th century AD, the Salonika (Greece) missionary brothers Kyril (also known as Constantine) and Methodius translated the Greek Gospels into Bulgarian in order to spread the Greek Orthodox faith. It is said that Kyril created the script based on the shape of capital letters in the Greek alphabet. A slightly older form is the Glagolitic alphabet, which is based on the lowercase letters of the Greek alphabet. In the Cyrillic alphabet, B is written as [v] and И (from the Greek letter H) is written as [i], reflecting the phonetic values of the Greek alphabet at the time. It is currently used in Slavic languages such as Russian, Bulgarian, Serbian, and Macedonian.
