Lithuanian - Lithuanian (English spelling)

It is the national language of the Republic of Lithuania, with an estimated 2.98 million speakers in the Republic and 690,000 in the United States and other countries. It belongs to the Baltic branch of the Indo-European language family and is known to retain ancient characteristics comparable to those of ancient Indian and ancient Greek. There are many dialects, but they are divided into two major dialects, the High and the Low. The standard language was established in the late 19th and early 20th centuries based on the Southwestern High dialect, which retains its ancient forms well. The oldest written document is the translation of Luther's Catechism (published in 1547), but grammar books, dictionaries, and literary works have appeared one after another since the 17th century, providing valuable resources for Lithuanian language research.
