This API was used in the "Voodoo" series of GPUs by 3dfx, a GPU manufacturer that was absorbed by NVIDIA. It was designed to fully utilize the performance of Voodoo-equipped video cards, but now that 3dfx is gone, it has become a relic of the past as an API. Because it is easier to use than Direct3D, which is included in DirectX, many games from around 1997 to 1999 advertised Glide compatibility. The Windows version of "Final Fantasy VII" is a representative example.

NVIDIAに吸収合併されたGPUメーカー、3dfxのGPU「Voodoo」シリーズで採用されていたAPI。Voodoo搭載ビデオカードの性能をフルに発揮するように設計されていたが、3dfxなき今、APIとしても過去の遺物となってしまった。DirectXに含まれるDirect3Dよりも扱いやすいため、1997～1999年頃のゲームはGlide対応を謳うものが多かった。Widnows版の「Final Fantasy VII」はその代表的なタイトル。
