Yasuyuki Matsui
Year of death: January 23, 1612 (February 24, 1612)
Year of birth: Tenbun 19.11.1 (1550.12.8)
A military commander in the Azuchi-Momoyama period. His father was Masayuki and his mother was the daughter of Arakawa Suminobu. He was a close attendant to Shogun Ashikaga Yoshiteru. After Yoshiteru's assassination, he fled to Omi with Hosokawa Fujitaka (Yusai) and met him. In September 1568, he was instrumental in Fujitaka's recovery of Seiryu-ji Temple in Yamashiro, and with Yoshiaki's help, he became Fujitaka's guest. When Fujitaka was given the Tango domain in 1580, he became a chief retainer alongside Fujitaka's second son Nagaoka (Hosokawa) Okimoto, and then the castle lord of Kumi. In 1581, he was awarded a waistcoat by Hashiba (Toyotomi) Hideyoshi for his achievements in the Battle of Komaki and Nagakute, and the following year he was assigned 13 koku of land in Yamashiro Yasemura as his maternal share. In 1585, he participated in the siege of Odawara with Fujitaka's eldest son Tadaoki. In Bunroku 1 (1592), he accompanied Tadaoki to Korea, where he distinguished himself in the capture of Jinju Castle. Hideyoshi offered him direct vassalage and half of the province of Iwami, but he firmly declined, citing his gratitude to Yusai and his son. In Keicho 5 (1600), when Tadaoki obtained 60,000 koku in Bungo Province, he was put in charge of Kitsuki Castle in the same province, and after the Battle of Sekigahara, when Tadaoki was granted Buzen Province as well, he was given 25,000 koku and became a chief retainer. He was a senior disciple of Sen no Rikyu, and also excelled in the tea ceremony. <References> Hosokawa Morisada, "Hosokawa Yusai," "Watako Shuroku," Vol. 1
