A perennial aquatic plant of the Ranunculaceae family, also known as Umebachimo. It grows in the clear water of ponds and rivers in Hokkaido and Honshu. The roots are beard-like and white, the stems are long and branched with nodes, and grow to about 50 cm, thriving in running water. The leaves are alternate and finely lobed like threads, and the base of the petiole forms a sheath. In summer, long flower stalks grow above the water surface from the nodes of the stem, and bloom into five-petaled white flowers about 1 cm in diameter that resemble plum blossoms. The calyx has five circular green petals, the petals are obovate, and the achene is spherical.
