An evergreen perennial plant of the family Atractylodes (APG classification: Atractylodes family). The leaves, which grow in clusters at the ends of thin creeping stems, are leathery, broadly round or round with concave tips. In spring, a flower stalk extends from the leaf axil and produces a single red-purple flower. The flower is bell-shaped with five lobes, the lobes of which are further divided into smaller pieces. It has five stamens and five pseudostamens. It grows in dark mountainous areas and is found only on Honshu. The closely related Ryukyu Iwauchiwa, also known as Shimai Iwauchiwa, is found south of Amami Oshima and in Taiwan, and has white flowers. There is also one species each in North America and China in this genus.

イワウメ科（APG分類：イワウメ科）の常緑多年草。地をはう細い茎の先に群生する葉は革質、広円形または円形で先がへこむ。春、葉の腋(わき)から花柄を伸ばし紅紫色の1花をつける。花は鐘形で5裂し、裂片はさらに細かく裂ける。5本の雄しべと5個の仮雄蕊(かゆうずい)がある。山地の暗い所に生え、本州にのみ分布する。近縁のリュウキュウイワウチワはシマイワウチワともいい、奄美(あまみ)大島以南、台湾に分布し、花が白色である。この属にはほかに北アメリカ、中国に1種ずつ分布する。
