...The Avars appeared on the Caspian coast around 460 and subjugated the Hunnic-Bulgar tribes. They continued to move westward, threatening the Byzantine Empire from the mid-6th century onwards, allied with the Lombards to destroy the East Germanic-Gothic Gepids, settled in the Danube region, subjugated the neighboring Slavic tribes and established a large empire. From there they repeatedly invaded the Byzantine Empire and the Frankish Empire, but were dealt a major blow when they were defeated by the Byzantine Emperor Heraclius in 624.
