...A small underground mammal that digs tunnels using its front paws with large claws and incisors that protrude from its mouth, and feeds mainly on plant roots and bulbs. A general term for animals in the family Geomyidae of rodents, with 34 species found in North America. The muscles from the neck to the chest, which are necessary for digging tunnels, are particularly well developed, giving the body a sturdy appearance overall.
