A seabird of the family Spheniscus, order Aves. It breeds on islands in the high latitudes of Antarctica and in the sub-Antarctic waters, and is a large species that can reach a total length of 95 cm. It is also called the king penguin. It feeds on fish and squid, and breeds in groups on coastal slopes free of ice and snow. It lays a single egg and incubates it for 55 days. It takes 10 to 13 months for the chicks to leave the nest. It breeds at most twice every three years.

鳥綱ペンギン目ペンギン科の海鳥。南極の高緯度部分や亜南極海域の島で繁殖し、全長95センチメートルに達する大形種。オウサマペンギンともいわれる。魚類やイカを食べ、氷雪のない海岸斜面で集団繁殖する。1卵を産み、55日間抱卵。雛(ひな)が巣立つのに10~13か月かかる。多くても3年に2回の繁殖をするだけである。
