A seabird of the family Spheniscus, order Aves. It breeds on islands in the high latitudes of Antarctica and in the sub-Antarctic waters, and is a large species that can reach a total length of 95 cm. It is also called the king penguin. It feeds on fish and squid, and breeds in groups on coastal slopes free of ice and snow. It lays a single egg and incubates it for 55 days. It takes 10 to 13 months for the chicks to leave the nest.
