A member of the Society of Paris Foreign Missions in France. After graduating from the society's seminary in 1852, he evangelized in America, Canada, and other countries. Later, in Paris, he wrote "History of Christianity in Korea" (2 volumes, published in 1874) from 1871 to 1874. This book is based on materials collected by Father MAN Daveluy (whose Chinese name was An Don-i), a priest belonging to the society who was martyred in Byeong-in Prison in Korea (1866), and sent to the society's headquarters in Paris, and is a fundamental document on the history of Christianity in Korea (the introduction has been translated into Japanese under the title "The Korean Affairs").

フランスのパリ外国宣教会士。1852年に同会の神学校を卒業後，アメリカ，カナダ等で布教。のちパリで71年から翌年にかけて《朝鮮基督教史》(全2巻，1874刊)を執筆した。この書は，朝鮮の丙寅教獄(1866)で殉教した同会所属の神父ダブリュイM.A.N.Daveluy(漢名は安敦伊)が収集し，パリの同会本部に送付していた資料に依拠したもので，朝鮮キリスト教史の基本文献となっている(序論は《朝鮮事情》の題で邦訳がある)。
