In the German Lutheran Evangelical Church, the cantor was a composer, conductor, and educator rather than a singer. The cantor served as a music teacher at the church school, and organized the cantorei (a choir of instrumentalists and a chorus of children's voices) with the students he instructed and trained as the center of worship. The rise of music in the German Evangelical Church from the 16th to the 18th centuries cannot be discussed without taking into account the cantor's position and the cantorie tradition.
