…Many of them were against independence, but they did not necessarily agree with British policy and hoped for reconciliation between the mother country and the colonies. One of them was Joseph Galloway (1731-1803), who proposed a plan for a union between the mother country and the colonies at the Continental Congress in 1774, and was an outstanding Loyalist leader. After the outbreak of the war, it is said that about 50,000 Loyalists joined the British army or organized militias to fight against the colonial army. …
