An industrial city on the Japan coast of South Gyeongsang Province, Korea. In 1997, it was promoted to Korea's sixth metropolitan city. It has 4 districts and 1 county. Construction of an industrial complex began in 1962, and since then, it has achieved remarkable development as Korea's largest industrial city. It is said to be a model of Korean industrialization. Korea's leading heavy chemical industries, including oil refineries, petrochemical complexes, shipbuilding, automobiles, and chemical fertilizers, are concentrated here, and Hyundai Motors and Hyundai Shipyard are famous. The surrounding area is a major rice-producing region. One of the Miura Wakan was established in Shioura, Buk-gu, in 1426 to trade with Japan, but it was closed in the Miura Rebellion in 1509. On Hakuseongsan in the northeast, there is the ruins of Ulsan Castle, which was built by the Japanese side and used for siege during the invasion by Hideyoshi's army during the Bunroku-Keicho War. 1,082,567 people (2010).

韓国，慶尚南道の日本海岸の工業都市。1997年韓国第６番目の広域市に昇格。４区１郡。1962年に工業団地の造成に着手，以後，韓国最大の工業都市として目ざましい発展をとげた。韓国工業化のモデルともいわれる。石油精製，石油化学コンビナート，造船，自動車，化学肥料など韓国屈指の重化学工業が集中，現代自動車，現代造船所などが有名。付近は有数の米作地帯。北区の塩浦に1426年に三浦倭館の一つが設置されて日本との交易がなされたが，1509年の三浦の乱で閉鎖された。北東の鶴城山には，文禄・慶長の役の秀吉軍の侵略の際に日本側が築いて籠城した蔚山城跡がある。108万2567人（2010）。
