A group of people scattered across southern Vietnam and Cambodia, descendants of the people who once founded the Champa Kingdom in central Vietnam. The population is estimated at about 280,000. There are Hindus and Muslims. The Cham people had a great influence linguistically and culturally on some of the Moi peoples in southern Vietnam. They cultivate wet rice and live in a matrilineal society. In Cambodia, where the Cham people are mixed with Malays and many are Muslim, they tend to place importance on patriarchy and the father-son relationship.
