A Christian women's organization that originated from the women's temperance movement in the United States. It was formed in 1883 by FEC Willard (1839-98) and others, and has since become a worldwide organization. Its original purpose was the temperance movement, but now it also campaigns for chastity and peace for men and women. In Japan, the Japan Women's Christian Temperance Union was founded in 1893 (first chairwoman Yajima Kajiko), and worked hard to establish laws banning smoking and alcohol for minors, as well as anti-prostitution laws. It is currently particularly focused on the world peace movement. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
